After an icy, snow-filled winter, Solon residents are eagerly awaiting the first blooms of spring. But just how far off is the annual equinox heralding sunnier days, budding plants, and green grass? Let’s find out!
To start, the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere typically falls on March 19th or 20th. As I write this on Saturday January 27th, that puts us 52 days away from the official start of spring.
52 days may sound long when you’re bundled up against subzero wind chills, but the wait for spring’s rebirth is shorter than you think! Before we know it, icicles will melt away, dormant lawns will reawaken into lush green carpets, and the landscape will bloom into the gorgeous colors we Iowans savor.
Until then, the Solon Area Community Foundation recommends embracing the beauty of winter as we count down to warmer weather. Go ice skating on Lake MacBride, check out holiday light displays with the family, drink hot cocoa after sledding, and support local eateries offering winter comfort food specials.
I have my own Spring milestones I eagerly count down during winter’s last days!
Valentines Day | When cupid strikes, I know melted hearts are just the start! Chocolates and flowers mean spring planting time is drawing near.
Daytona 500 | This first stock car race revs engines loud as I dream of dropping the top, cranking tunes, and finally going for long sunny drives.
Easter Sunday | Seeing fresh flowers, blooming trees, and fuzzy little critters means spring’s definitely sprung by mid-April! Time to decorate eggs and await the Easter Bunny.
The Masters | Watcing golf’s first major amid azaleas blooming, I picture perfect tee shots dotted with yellow pollen floating on warm southern breezes. Sign me up for a tee time!
Kentucky Derby | As Churchill’s spires host thoroughbreds dashing the “most exciting two minutes in sports,” I say cheers to bluegrass views and to hitting some of the Solon trails!
Indy 500 | And when those 33 race cars speed around the Brickyard each May, engine roars and waving checkered flags signal Memorial Day cookouts!
Stay cozy my friends – spring will sprung again soon enough here in our wonderful hometown! Let the countdown begin!
✨52 days to go!✨
