Fall is a wonderful time to get outside and enjoy the crisp, cool weather before winter arrives. Here are some fun outdoor activities to try this autumn:
Take a Hike
The fall foliage makes hiking incredibly scenic this time of year. Look for trails at local parks or nature preserves to enjoy the changing leaves. Pack a picnic or snacks to enjoy at a scenic overlook. Just remember to dress in layers for the fluctuating temperatures. We are fortunate to have so many great parks and trails to explore so make sure to take advantage of these.
Have a Bonfire
An evening around a warming bonfire is a quintessential fall activity. Invite friends over, bring s’mores ingredients or other snacks, play some acoustic guitar, and relax under the stars. Just be sure to properly put out the fire before leaving it unattended.
Go Apple or Pumpkin Picking
Visit a local apple orchard or pumpkin patch and pick your own fresh fruit or gourds. Many orchards and patches have hayrides, corn mazes, and other fun activities as well. Take home apples for baking or carving pumpkins for Halloween decor. Remember we are close to Wilson’s Apple Orchard and Kroul Farms and both are highly recommended.
Fly a Kite
The gusty winds of autumn are perfect for flying kites. Head to an open park or field and see your kite soar up into the blue (or grey) sky. This is a fun family activity for a brisk fall afternoon.
Take Up Bird Watching
Fall migration makes autumn a great season for bird watching. Try spotting passing waterfowl at a lake or river, or look for migratory songbirds in the trees. Bring some binoculars and a bird guide to help identify the species you see. Visit Lake McBride and you’re sure to see ducks, geese, and many other species of birds.
Get outside and make the most of autumn before the cold weather sets in! The fresh air and natural beauty of the season are good for the mind and spirit. Let us know if the comments what your favorite Autumn outdoor activity is.
