Solon, Iowa, may be a small town, but its heart beats strong thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Solon Area Community Foundation (SACF). Since its establishment in 1981, SACF has been instrumental in transforming community dreams into tangible realities.
Empowering the Next Generation
Education is a cornerstone of SACF’s mission. Each year, the Foundation awards three $750 scholarships to Solon High School seniors, alongside the prestigious $4,000 Doris Looney Memorial Scholarship. In 2024, recipients like Kate Richards, Jamison Grimm, Ashley Hummel, Mia Stahle, and Peyton Pentico exemplified the bright future of our community .
Enhancing Community Spaces
SACF’s commitment extends beyond education. The Foundation has funded numerous projects that enrich our communal spaces.
- Solon Recreation and Nature Area (SRNA): From initial grading in 1999 to recent enhancements, SACF’s support has been pivotal in developing this cherished local haven.
- Solon Community Center: In 2018, a donation of $2,310 facilitated the purchase of new signage, enhancing the center’s visibility and accessibility.
- Solon Firehouse: A significant $30,000 contribution in 2019 aided in the development of our vital emergency services facility .
Fostering Community Spirit
Beyond physical projects, SACF nurtures the spirit of Solon through various initiatives:
- Freedom Rock: In 2015, a $12,300 donation supported the creation of the Johnson County Freedom Rock, honoring local veterans and enhancing our community’s historical landscape.
- Water Tower Custom Painting: A $5,000 contribution in 2016 added a unique touch to our city’s skyline, reflecting Solon’s pride and identity.
